Two blocks from the Cos, Chase circled back thirty feet. He rested his hand on Switchblade’s arm. “The bleeding stopped. Can you make it the rest of the way?”

“Just had to slow down a minute. You think the nano stuff bleeding out will take me down the way it does you?”

“My processors rely on the nanobots. It’s not the same for you. But it’s only been a couple of days since you were injured. Your body’s still recovering.”

“My body recovered as soon as the doctor pumped your blood into me.” Switchblade threw his shoulders back and stepped up his pace. “Come on. Our two hours is about up. Don’t want Melody coming after us. Girl’s got a temper.”

“I was about to face that wrath when you came up on us today.”

“What’d you do, robot?”

“I know we said we wouldn’t tell her about the transfusion, but I don’t want any more secrets between us.” Chase rounded the corner a block from the monstrous building.

“Let me tell her. She might love you more, but she’ll yell at me less.”

Chase laughed. “You’re right. Maybe she’d go easy on me if we tell her together.”

They entered through the big doors with five minutes to spare. Plenty of time to get to the command center. Chase sucked in a breath. He had to straighten the paths between the exoself and Mel’s code. And he had to get the bases back online. The lack of communication between up-top believers worried him.

They exited the lift on the twentieth floor. Switch pushed the door open and entered the command center first. And it took Mel only seconds to react to the sight of his mutilated jacket and bloody arm.

“I knew something like this would happen.” She ran to Switchblade and grasped his hands. “How bad are you hurt?”

“It’s nothing. Just a cut.”

She eyed Chase. “Tell me the truth.”

He nodded, and she let go of Switchblade and threw her arms around Chase. “Are you all right? I’ve been so worried. You’ve got to get the screen communication working again so we won’t be out of touch.” She let him go and lowered her brow. “Better yet, don’t go off like that again. Do you understand?”

Before he could answer, she had Switchblade by the arm, dragging him back to the lift.

“Mel? Where are you going?” Chase called after her.

“Clinic on the tenth floor. Come on.”

Chase followed, and the lift headed down at Mel’s command.

Switchblade leaned against the opaque wall of the lift. “Melody, we was gonna have a talk with you about some things that happened on the way to Detroit.”

“First, tell me what the two of you have been doing out there today.” She stepped close to Chase as the lift door opened. “I know you want to help people. But it’s too dangerous. Please, for my sake, tell me you won’t make a habit of this.”

He sank into her brown eyes. But he couldn’t make her any promises.

“We’ll talk about this later.” She walked ahead and pushed open the door to reveal a small medical facility.
